Miller教授の訃報の追記

　先日、Miller教授の訃報の記事を載せたが、先週のThe Economistをみたら、なんとObituaryの欄にMiller教授が取り上げられていてちょっと驚いた。この欄はいわば、一週間のあいだに亡くなった著名人を1人取り上げてエッセイを書くものだが、化学者でこの欄に取り上げられたのはC60のSmalley以来ではないか？

Stanley Miller, seeker after the origin of life, died on May 20th, aged 77

　ちなみにこの実験が行われたのとほぼ同時期にワトソン＝クリックのDNAモデルが論文になっている。追悼記事を見ると、当時はMillerの実験のほうがよりセンセーショナルに取り上げられていたらしい。
　件の記事はこう結んでいる。科学の進歩の気まぐれさというか、一種の非情さを見る思いがする。
